Hanukkah Crafts!
Written By Savvy Auntie Staff Writers
What better way to share the story of Hanukkah and create memories with nieces or nephews than to doing Hanukkah activities with them?
Handprint Menorah (younger children)
Dip the child’s hands into paint, and have him or her spread his or her fingers wide. Place both hands next to each other, with the thumbs overlapping each other, and then help the children press their hands onto construction paper. They will create nine candles, including the one for the Shamash. Each night, they can “light” a candle by painting or coloring a “flame” on the top of each finger. What a fun - and safe! - way to bring some holiday spirit.
Star of David "Picture Frame"
Here's another easy activity that children can use to decorate or give as a gift to someone, e.g. their favorite Savvy Auntie. Using craft foam or construction paper, cut two triangles that are the same size. You can use the same color for both triangles, or different colors of your (or the child’s) choosing. Glue one triangle on top of the other, one point facing up, the other one down - i.e. into a Star of David. Trim a photo of the children - with their Auntie! - into a triangle and glue it on top. You can place one picture on each side of the star, or on just one side, and have your niece or nephew write a note or sign the other triangle. If you’re feeling extra festive, kids can decorate the star with glitter, sequins, or markers.
Star of David Art
Another Star of David activity uses popsicle sticks. Kids can paint the sticks, and once dried, glue them into the shape of a Star of David. When the glue dries, they can then decorate the sticks. Loop pipe cleaner or ribbon through the top point of the star to make decorations they can hang from door knobs, from thumbtacks, or even on a tree if they also celebrate Christmas. An alternative is to glue a magnet strip to the back of one or two sticks to make a magnet for the refrigerator. Don’t forget to write down the Hanukkah year on the back of the star for posterity!
