The Shopping Auntie

This evening I returned a call to my sister-in-law, who had left one of those SOS messages on my machine earlier in the day. Bella really likes to be part of the conversation and will not "need" her mother's attention until she's on the phone, so as usual, Bella was pestering and carrying on in the background before my SIL finally asked her if she'd like to say hello and gave her the phone.

"I need to go shopping for sugar Auntie!" she told me.

"Sugar! What are you making with sugar?" I asked her. (She's my little chef.)

"Colored water, of course." she replied with a hint of annoyance, as if I should have already known that. "It's all gone." Bella's grammy introduced her to Kool-Aid over Christmas, much to her daughter's angst, and now Bella thinks its the best thing since milk.

"Can we go shopping now?" she asked expectantly. I so hated to break her little heart by telling her that it was 7:30 at night and it was almost time for all of us to go to bed so we'd have to go shopping another day.

She gave the phone back to her mom and we continued our conversation, which somehow ended up talking about chickens. Next thing I know I hear Bella's little voice "I'm afraid of chickens, Auntie. They scare me."

"Why do they scare you?" I asked her.

    "They look funny," she replied.

"Well, you know, the chickens have already gone to bed with their mommies and daddies. They sleep when its dark outside, so they go to the barn and sleep in the hay. Do you have hay at your house?"

"No, auntie, the hay is at your house!" (She's right about that.... its what my guinea pigs eat!) "Do you have chickens?"

"No, I don't have chickens. They live on the farm."

"Oh OK they went to sleep. Good night, Auntie. I love you!"

Then Bella hung up, and thus ended my conversation with her mother!
