Books!

So my brilliant nephew Red is quite the little reader. He's in second grade, but reads at a seventh grade (!!!) level. We're having a time finding books to read. Harry Potter's a little scary for him, but he likes magical stories. He's a collector, so he likes series books in particular. His favorite books are the Avatar graphic novels.

I'm sending over my Narnia books, and am planning on reading the Eragon books (he saw the movie and is interested) to see if they would be good, but is there anything else I could recommend? He likes things with a good story, but also with some philosophy in them. Because, you know, all 7-year-olds like philosophy. I now have more sympathy for my mom who was trying to explain allegory and imagery to me when I was about his age.

This kid is my kind of geek.

WOW, that is amazing! What do you think about THE HOBBIT or THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J.R.R. Tolkien? I think he might enjoy them. They are magical, they are a series, they have a good story, and a litle bit of philosphy too (lol). My nephew is also 7 and I got the The Hobbit for him. He isn't a fast reader and he is still working his way through the book, but he likes it.

Hi Kate,

Just wanted to share with you a book that your nephew might like (if he hasn't read it already)! My nephew introduced me to Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Oh my goodness, I haven't read it myself, but my nephew LOVES it. He read the first book in less than a week, and was jumping on my bed Sunday morning begging me to take him to Barnes and Noble to buy the second book. He even had me sign up for a mailing list that will inform me as soon as the third installment reaches book shelves! Its fantastic to see him get so excited about reading. Its even got him thinking about starting his own diary that he plans on calling Diary of a COOL kid. LOL

Have you heard about the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series. It has a mythological bent to I know a lot of kids who love them.

Sounds interesting. I just looked him up, and it looks like he's got another series that I was already looking at. Anyone heard of the 39 Clues books?

Yes! In fact it's one of the hottest books of the season! It's so compelling, it will be hard for your nephew to put it down. Normally, it's for kids ages 9-12, but it seems your nephew is an advanced reader.

Anything by Odo Hirsch always has a nice philosophical twist but is generally based on the everyday (so no scary dementors flying around). He's one of those authors that I wish had been around when I was growing up so I could have read them as a kid.

My favorite childhood book is Goodnight Moon. I was afraid it would be too old fashioned for my niece but she loves it too!
