Sarah, one of my nieces by choice, is afflicted with Rett Syndrome, which is the most physically disabling of the autism spectrum disorders. Primarily affecting little girls, Rett often strikes just after they have learned to walk and say a few words, and begins to drag their development backward. This debilitating syndrome includes symptoms seen in many other severe neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders on which Rett research may shed light.
Today, there is no cure. But Rett Syndrome is CURABLE! In February 2007. researchers announced that they had reversed this disease with mice. The success of this research hold the key to so much more than Rett's, including cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer's.
To further the fight for a cure AND the fight to integrate Rett's girls in society, Sarah's mom (my dear high school friend Ing) founded the non-profit Girl Power 2 Cure (girlpower2cure.org). Through CommuniCause, Girl Power 2 Cure is trying to win a Social Media Makeover valued at $25,000 to help improve their social media presence and fundraising outreach.
Like the little engine that could, Girl Power 2 Cure has pushed its way up to #9 in the rankings. Please help them push their way up to #1 and continue the fight for a cure for Rett Syndrome.
