First Birthday question

So my niece is about to turn 1 in September. (Time really does FLY!) I don't think my sister is planning on having a party or anything, and I can understand that because she wouldn't appreciate or remember it, really. Of course I have bought some gifts but is there anything else I should do to commemorate my niece's first birthday? I had started keeping a little journal for her after she was born but I forgot to update it for a while and then it seemed kind of lame to keep it going with a big hole in the timeline. My mom is thinking she'll make some frozen meals for my sister as a gift, as well as giving my niece a present or two. Are we missing anything, or is there anything else that would be nice for me/us to do to mark the occasion?

You definitely have to let her dig into her first birthday cake! And take photos and video of her on her birthday!

You may see if you can take her one evening around her birthday, bring her back to your place and just take pictures of the two of you and such. She won't remember it, that's true - but when she's older she'll love having those pictures to see what it was like! Maybe even create YouTube account to start taking videos of her. I did that when my niece was learning to crawl and she's almost five now and she loves to watch herself!!

I have the same problem with my niece. She turns one in November and her mother doesnt want to do a party because she won't remember it. She won't even do a cake because it's too much sugar. I want to do a cake anyways at my friends house and not tell her but if I take pictures, she will end up finding out later and that may not be pretty. I'm not sure what to do. In your situation, I would do something special just the two of you. I would take her to the zoo or out for ice cream. Maybe go shopping and let her pick out a present. Go to Build-A-Bear. That's what I would do.
