Taking sides between my niece & her dad (my brother)

My 12 year old niece & I have a very close relationship. A few weeks ago, she Emailed me & the first lines were "Your brother is a pain in the neck!"in BIG letters! She went on to say she had gotten in am argument with her dad (my brother ) about an Adam Sandler movie she had seen and had wanted to see again (I THINK it was called "Do The Right Thing" ) So he had said no. At first I started siding with her ,saying that she was getting to an age where she'd be fighting with her parents. But then I stopped myself & looked up the movie on a movie site. Good thing I did! That movie has some pretty foul language in it! (Plus I found out later she had seen it on the last cruise we were on when they gathered her group with the 17 year olds on the cruise we were on in April..What were they thinking?!) So I started my Email over again telling my niece that I WASN'T trying to take her dad's side, but that that movie had some pretty strong language in it & her dad was only trying to protect her. (I didn't know until earlier this month that she'd seen it on the April cruise.) I then told her that MY favorite Adam Sandler movie was "50 First Dates" & when I see her in August I'll rent it so she & I could watch it together.
I haven't heard back from her on that yet, but she's been busy with camp.

Do the Right Thing is definitely NOT an Adam Sandler movie. I think you should re-check the title and do another search. As far as I know (I have certainly not seen them all), pretty much all Adam Sandler movies seem to be about on the same level as far as appropriate/inappropriate for kids of a certain age. You didn't mention how olf your niece is but in my humble opinion, language is something kids will be exposed to eventually, it's just a matter of when... Of course, this may or may not be something that you/your brother agree with me on. Anyway, I would keep in mind that a movie is probably not something that is worth damaging either of these relationships over so you may consider to just sympathize with your niece that yes it's frustrating, but not take it any further than that.

I made a mistake:
The movie was called Just Go With It. My niece is 12 , but VERY mature for her age.
50 First Dates has some strong language in it. So (even though it'll break my heart to lie to my niece.) maybe I'll say the video store didn't have a copy in. It's shown on cable a lot without the cursing. Or maybe I'll talk to my brother (her dad) see what he says. I'm sure Just Go With It was MUCH worse..

We wound up not seeing 50 First Dates after all.(My brother had everything scheduled.) So I played Scrabble with my 12 year old niece. She beat me. (I'm not surprised. ! )

Sorry, looking back I see that you DID mention how old your niece is, I just wasn't paying very good attention. I'm glad things worked out where you weren't put in an awkward position and it sounds like you guys had fun. :)
