Am I Being Selfish?

Hi. I have a question. My brother is about to have his second child. I have been in the delivery room for 2 births including his first child (my niece) and my nephew. I really don't want to hurt his feelings but he expects me to be in the delivery room again. I mean I know it is an honor but I am a teenager with no experiences in that kind of thing and it makes me uncomfortable. How do I tell him no without sounding rude? OR Am I just being selfish?

All I would say is that I am honnred to be in the delivery room, but I am sorry but I don't feel comfortable when I am in the delivery room.

I always think the delivery room is for the husband and maybe the mother of the mother. But that's just me. I wasn't in the delivery room when my niece was born. Oh I would have loved to. But then I knew my husband would feel left alone in the waiting room. And a girl has to have some privacy (my sister). So I understand. I would think just saying you are happy to do something else. Make phone calls, watch one of your nieces or nephews. I mean, with my sister it happened so fast I couldn't have been there. I didn't even know she was in labor until she called to say my niece was born.

He should be understanding. It isn't at all selfish!

This is tough. Being on the totally opposite end of the spectrum, if my SIL and Brother asked me to be in the delivery room, I would probably break down crying.

However, this is about you, not me. If you are truly not comfortable, I would just pull your brother aside and explain it. Tell him that you will be at the hospital, and that you can't wait to meet your new little niece or nephew. He should understand. I bet the nurses will be happy, too, to have the extra space.

Hi, it seems to me that if you are uncomfortable in the delivery room, and have been present for 2 births, that it would be perfectly okay to say no, because you have already done it. If you feel comfortable offer to help by being at the hospital (if you want), or do something else to contribute and help your family.

I am impressed with you! I am a first time aunt and I don't think I could have been in the delivery room.
