Hi DizzyGirl,
Wow, my heart really goes out to you...not because you are single, but because of the terribly rude questions and statements your niece has made to you.
I am still single at 42 and have two nieces...and thankfully they don't ask me why I'm still single and certainly don't say inconsiderate comments like those said by your niece...(although who knows whether they think it!)
I'm commenting on the inconsiderate comments made by your niece so much because I think THAT'S the bigger issue here...
Why does this child, even though she is a child, feel that it is OK to say such rude things? Who is the adult in her life that is not seemingly teaching her that this is not OK?
The next time she says such inconsiderate things to you, I would encourage you to treat it as a teachable moment...to teach her about how one treats other people, to teach her about empathy, to teach her about how to properly communicate with people...
Also, perhaps you need to talk with her parents about this...they should be aware of these comments she is making...so they can also teach her better communication skills and more compassion...
How can she start doing better if she doesn't start knowing better?
Sorry....I don't mean to be rude or overly diss your niece, but, when I read your post, I am seeing a major red flag here...
That someone is not teaching this child these important life skills (e.g., proper communication skills, etc.)...or they are, and the lessons need to be re-taught.
