Dear Savvy Auntie,

My nieces are coming to visit this week. One is heading back home, the other is moving with her dad. They will be living apart (3000 miles apart) for the first time. How can I best help them during this difficult time?

Long Distance Nieces

Dear Long Distance Nieces,

Since you didn’t say how old your nieces are it is difficult for me to offer specific suggestions. My general advice is to simply follow your heart in creating paths of communication. There are so many ways for people to stay in touch these days , such as Skype.com, Instagram, Facebook.com, and many others. You could sit down with both girls and talk about the options. “Old fashioned” snail mail with letters, cards, and notes are still meaningful communication channels. If possible, have both girls come to visit you once a year for a reunion would be a wonderful tradition.I think your intention for them to stay connected is transmitted to them and they will even develop their own connectors..

Good Luck,
