Calling all book lovers! Looking for something fun to do with your niece and nephew this coming weekend? January 24th will be a day especially made for all the bookworms out there -- it will mark the first annual National Readathon Day. Time to exercise your minds from noon to 4PM at a participating library, school, or bookstore near you!
The National Book Foundation, a non-profit organization that focuses on bringing books to communities in need, created this campaign to benefit its educational programs. With the help of Penguin Random House, Goodreads, and Mashable, these organizations hope to encourage a love of reading.
Organizers of the campaign have provided a Google Map that locates all the participating locations across the U.S. In order to participate, you can start by creating your own fundraising page. From here, you can begin collecting donations. Encourage your niece or nephew to get as many family members and friends involved to help. There are even some fun incentives for fundraising, including a trip to the National Book Awards ceremony for top teams. You can check out these fundraising details on the Firstgiving donation website.
This is a great opportunity not only to unplug and spend time with your niece or nephew, but to help out a great cause at the same time. Aunties can make this a learning moment by teaching their young one that they can have fun while helping others -- and get some reading and learning in, too! Knowing they have encouragement and support is important for kids, and Auntie can help model giving behavior while spending time with nieces and nephews.
So grab your nieces and nephews and a list of books, and get reading. It is sure to be FAuntastic!
For more information or to start your own fundraising page visit the FirstGiving National Readathon Day Site or the National Book Foundation for participating locations.
