Baby to Baby: Looks Who's Talking!

If you have twin nieces or nephews, they're probably more interested in talking to each other than you. Don’t take it personally, Auntie. It's not you. It's them.
According to McGill’s School of Communication Disorders, babies are much more perceptive to infant-like sounds than adult voices. The babies in the study paid attention to infant vowel sounds almost forty-percent longer than adult woman vowel sounds. They were also much more responsive to the infant-like sounds, as you can see in the adorable results of the experiment.
Professor Linda Polka theorizes: “Perhaps when we use a high, infant-like voice pitch to speak to our babies, we are actually preparing them to perceive their own voice.” Babies need to practice speaking by first discovering what kind of sounds they can make. Next time you play with the little ones, see what a difference it makes to speak using baby talk. Or, if there are more than one, watch how the communicate with each other. It's like music to their ears.
