AUNTIE UP! Would You Give Your Aspiring Photographer Niece the Camera She Wants?

It
seems like every day, nieces and nephews pick up a new interest or
hobby. Some stay with them for a lifetime, and others come and go. What
do you do when you want to support a new interest of theirs, but aren’t
sure if it will be worth the investment in the long run?
We gave the Auntourage on our Facebook page this situation to comment on:
“AUNTIE
UP! Your 16 year old niece has gotten really into photography, and
you'd like to buy her a professional camera for her birthday. The one
she wants costs more than you would normally spend, but ... well, she's
so talented and needs a good camera if she is going to pursue
photography seriously. The problem is that her parents say she gets
tired of her new hobbies every couple of months and it's a waste of
money. But you think this time, she's going to stick with it. Her
birthday is next week. What do you do?”
Jill Hansen offered: “I
would buy a less expensive camera as a "starter camera" and let her know
that she can begin practicing with that one. Then, if she is still
pursuing the hobby I would get her the more expensive one for Christmas
or her next birthday.”
Shelli Pearson Bedell replied with: “I
would buy her the camera. Tell her that if she loses interest she needs
to give the camera back to you and you will sell it and give her the
money. This might be something she absolutely loves. Even if only as a
hobby.”
Others, like Marlene Waddell, see this situation as a
learning opportunity. She advised: “Let her earn it herself so she can
see the value of hard work & using $ she earned to buy something
nice for herself.”
So Savvy Aunties, would you splurge on the new camera? Give us your opinion!
