While all aunties are special on Auntie's Day, there are some incredible women that were even more incredible because they were Aunties. Here are five women that make great Auntie role models.
Chelsea Handler: Probably one of the coolest Single Ladies out there today, Chelsea Handler is a very Savvy Auntie. While she once said “My dogs are enough,” when asked if she ever wanted children, she cares deeply for her niece. In her bestseller, Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea, Handler wrote about trying to “secure the favorite aunt position” while being the only Long-Distance Auntie in the family. In the same book, she frequently wrote about her Aunt Gerdy who was just as wild as she is, but was always there when she needed her (she once relied on her Auntie to bail her out of jail).
Jane Austen: In a letter to her niece, Caroline, Jane Austen wrote, “Now that you have become an Aunt, you are a person of some consequence & must excite great Interest whatever you do. I have always maintained the importance of aunts as much as possible, & I am sure of your doing the same now.” Jane was a very devoted and doting aunt who was admired and adored by all of her nieces and nephews. Jane took in two of her nephews when their mother died. Her writing made her all the more appealing as an Auntie as she would tell them stories that excited their imagination.
Kim Cattrall: This is one actress that embodies her character. When asked where she would be in ten years, the Sex and the City actress who played Samantha Jones responded “I hope sort of the same as Samantha. I don’t have my own kids, but when I’m around my niece and nephews, I feel like they’re my kids. I hope I’ll still be in a happy, healthy relationship—still enjoying life and taking risks.”
Virginia Woolf: An incredible writer of feminist literature, Virginia Woolf was a loving if unconventional aunt to her three nieces and nephews, Julian, Quentin, and Angelica. She called them “an immense source of pleasure.” She once remarked of the two boys, “I can’t believe they’re not my younger brothers.”
Cameron Diaz: While she recently married Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden, Cameron Diaz still says, “I like protecting people, but I was never drawn to being a mother.” And she is very protective of her three nieces and nephews, spoiling them every chance she gets. “I spoil them rotten. Whatever they want, they get. I cannot resist them.”
