Getting Savvy about Kids with Diabetes

While lots of us are looking forward to pumpkin pie and other goodies on Thursday, what about those who have to watch their diets because of diabetes? November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, a great time to raise awareness about this condition that affects nearly 26 million Americans. Every year, more than 15,000 kids in the U.S. are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Hearing that your niece or nephew has been diagnosed with diabetes can be scary – but it can be managed. Talk with the parents to find out what kinds of foods the child should minimize or stay away from, and plan accordingly when you’re with them. Adjust recipes to have less fat and sugar, and during holidays and birthdays, focus less on food and more on games, activities, and being together. Learn how to check glucose levels, administer glucagon or insulin if needed, and become familiar with the signs and symptoms of hypo- and hyperglycemia, and how to deal with it. Find out what snacks they like that are good for them, and stock up when you know they’ll be over. There are also some fun kid’s books about diabetes that you can read with them: Even Superheroes Get Diabetes or The Great Katie Kate Discusses Diabetes, or look through Diabetes Snacks, Treats, and Easy Eats for Kids with them to whip up some diet-friendly goodies.
