Make-up for Tweens?

Are you a Fancy Auntie? One that likes pretty things and never leaves the house without perfectly coiffed hair, filed and polished nails, and make up on?
If so, you may find that your young niece is intrigued by the way you paint, polish, and primp yourself. So don't be surprised if she asks for some beauty tips.
The internet, television, and other technological and print mediums easily influence today’s young girls. They are hitting puberty earlier then in the past, and as a result, are part of an emerging demographic of self-conscious girls. These tweens (ages 8-14) see their celebrity role models, and even child stars, decked out in make-up and they want to follow suit.
As a result, a new tween beauty product niche appealing to this demographic has formed to keep up with demand. These items are often less costly but often made from more organic materials than traditional adult lines.
A recent New York Times article, It Starts with Lip Gloss, explores this young make-up phenomenon which doesn't stop at drugstore cosmetics. Some young girls are even reported to afford the luxury of going to salons for hair blowouts, facials, waxing, and makeup applications prior to going out for dinner or a celebratory gathering.
If your tween niece is part of this growing demographic, then you can help be a positive influence and make sure she takes make-up application responsibly. It may be fun to apply, but Savvy Aunties know that it's best if her make-up looks natural, and not like a Vegas showgirl.
So if she has parental approval to wear a little lip gloss for special occasions, tell your niece to start slowly. Treat her to a kid-friendly product, one that gives a little shine and subtle color. Then, if agreed upon, move onto other products as she gains confidence.
