When it comes to applying sunscreen, I used to think that my auntie was neurotic. She would lather me in sunscreen until my skin was white as a result, and made me sit in the shade for fifteen long minutes while the cream soaked into my skin. I used to make fun of her and became resentful, but now, I am grateful for her thoughtfulness.
In a recent study entitled Kids, Teens Ignore Sun Risks http://www.medpagetoday.com/Dermatology/SkinCancer/30787concludes that kids and teens ignore sun risks.
Despite the fact that knowledge of skin cancer increases with age, there is a behavioral resistance to lather, spray, or moisturize one's exposed skin. This is surprisingly alarming especially since there is conclusive evidence that sunburn during childhood almost doubles the risk of melanoma in adulthood.
So if you’re planning a day out in the sun with your nieces and nephews, it is important to apply sunscreen before you go out. This seemingly trivial act takes seconds now, and can save you and your loved ones years later.
It is also a good idea to come armed with protective lotions to avert the pain associated with severe sunburn and to help prevent this unnecessary type of cancer.
