We know kids start telling little fibs and lies when they are very young, but at what age do kids become really good at not telling the truth?
A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, found that by the time kids are in second grade, they become fairly good at telling lies. More interestingly, the researchers found that the kids who were better at lying also had stronger verbal working memories than their peers. The best liars have “the ability to juggle multiple pieces of information about words and language at once,” NYMag.com reports.
Researchers concluded that children with a good working knowledge of language are more likely to be able to manipulate that language when they lie, and therefore, are superior liars. But don’t worry; that doesn’t mean that your nieces and nephews with good verbal memory skills are more likely to lie. It’s just that those who do, are better at it.
