Kids Are Born to Love Superheroes
Written By Savvy Auntie Staff Writers
Our nieces and nephews, young and old, are often big fans of superheroes. Whether it’s the cartoon kids behind PJ Masks, the latest preschool superheroes, or classics like Wonder Woman and Batman, many kids are drawn to those who protect the weak - starting from a very young age.
A new study out of Kyoto University in Japan has found that babies as young as 6 months can recognize heroic figures and already show signs of adoration toward them, proving that recognizing heroism is innate. And by 10 months, these little justice seekers begin to understand when heroes intend to help, as opposed to their help being simply incidental.
Superheroes are more popular than ever in pop culture, so it’s easy for a Savvy Auntie to indulge a niece’s or nephew’s love for their superheroes. Co-watch their favorite cartoons and talk to them about the story and why the hero made the choices she or he did. A superhero doll or action figure will help them role-play being heroes. Or, simply ask them about their favorite superhero - and shares yours!
You’re helping develop nieces and nephews who grow up recognizing the helpers – and potentially, becoming heroes themselves.
