Junior Reporters!
Written By Savvy Auntie Staff Writers
Why not combine a day out with nieces and nephews with another fun experience. Have them be junior reporters for the day! So much can happen during our fun days with the kids we love that we forget to collect all the details and share the memories with other family members and friends afterward.
Whether it’s a day at the museum, a sporting event, a day exploring a new part of the city, or fun times at a state park, there will be lots of information, photos, souvenirs and funny stories to report on.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Notebook, whether paper or digital - and a pen or pencil for the paper notepad.
- Smartphone or digital camera with video capability.
- Mic for the reporter - even if it's just for show; the mics on video devices are pretty good.
- You may want to consider bringing a tote bag to hold all the things the group - or the Props person - gather along the way: ticket stubs; tour information, souvenirs and other keepsakes, etc.
Assign the four main roles, doubling up if needed: reporter; photographer / videographer; props person; producer
The Reporter takes notes on the day, including the details of where you all went and what you saw or experienced, and the stories the kids will want to share later. The reporter can get quotes from the group and perhaps even the people you interact with along the way, like the tour guide, the owner of the shop where you bought that funny hat, or the person sitting next to you at the ballgame.
Photographer / Videographer is in charge of taking the photos and video of the outing, making sure to capture the scenery, the experiences, and all kids and grownups with them.
The Props person will gather and keep all the memorabilia.
The Producer is the one who is good at keeping things on schedule and making sure everyone is doing his or her job. The producer can suggest the photographer / videographer shoot an interview the reporter does or ask the reporter to be filmed for a summary of what they just did or share a story the kids won’t want to forget.
Once the day is complete, the producer will work together with the reporter, photographer, Props person and Auntie to create a digital report on the day. It will include an edited version of the reporter's account on the day’s events, with photos and embedded videos. It can be posted wherever the parents and kids prefer, even it’s that a private blog just for the family and friends to see.
Not only will you have given your nieces and nephews a fun experience, they act of reporting on it makes it double the fun!
