Seems like the rivalry part is primary and the subject, fertility, is secondary. Have you asked her about it? I have come to feel that we women spend too much time trying to decipher each other's actions and motives and not enough time just being (lovingly) direct. I have the opposite prob. My SIL is on me to have kids, presumably to secure cousins for her little ones.

I tell my siblings they are making me broke with all the kids they are having; I never considered that they might find it anything other than funny. Thank you for that perspective!

having said that, the joke is like megan-alice93 says: not being able to afford so much stuff for them. I don't mean giving them stuff, because I can't out stuff the grandparents, but I'd love to be able to take them places like parks, short trips to lakes, rivers, oceans, etc (all within a 30 min drive of us) and for my youngest sister's kids, flying out to visit them a lot. Being on medical disability is not fun, but the money crunch is really inconvenient when it comes to having their birthdays piling up seemingly all at once!

I don't think there is such a thing as too many nieces and nephews, I love big families, and I love my family no matter its size so much. I love buying them stuff but more than that I think they love it and i do too, when we can get on the ground and play with toys and just have fun, eating snacks and making memories. But you could just straight up ask her about her comments, maybe she doesn't even think anything about it when she makes them or just needs a gentle reminder about how much fun being an aunt is!
