Dear Savvy Auntie,

My sister isn’t really doing the best she can for her kids. I am being advised that Child Protective Services should be called, but I don’t want to split the kids up or send them to their horrible excuse of a father. Doing so would traumatize my older autistic nephew and severely depress the younger nephew—but I cant take them either. Meanwhile, my sister refuses to take a reality check. What can I do to help those boys??

Reality Check Auntie

Dear Reality Check Auntie,

Oh, this must be a very painful predicament for you! I agree with you that Child Protective Services is not the best solution and should be called as a last resort.

I suggest you make a list of caring people and professionals who are connected to your sister and her sons. Starting with those closest to them, reach out and speak to them and gather their suggestions. At some point you might have a meeting to brainstorm the best way to approach your sister. Does she need drug/alcohol rehabilitation, parenting classes, housekeeping help? The children’s teachers, school psychologists, or coaches are good resources; especially your autistic nephew’s teachers.

A positive role model in the family or community can serve as a strong role model that will have lasting effects. So, take heart!

In the meantime they have you!

Best of Luck,
