Dear Savvy Auntie,

I am in desperate need of advice. I raised my niece for six years and now her mom took her away from me. At first she would let me visit my niece on the weekend but know she has been ignoring my calls. The last time I saw my niece, she told me she wanted to live with me again because she loves me and misses me.

I'm heartbroken and grieving over this situation. Can you please give me advice as to what to do?

Heartbroken

Dear Heartbroken,

Did something happen to provoke your sister.? Consider this carefully from her standpoint.

I can only see your sad, sad situation being approached through legal means. It seems as if your sister is unreachable. I am assuming you have tried in many ways to talk/write to her, to no avail. Have you offered her some financial compensation...this the first time in my thirty-five year career that I  have ever advised this as a possible solution.

Try to keep some connection with your niece via the internet, cards and letters and the telephone. It won’t be very long before she will have some say in this matter.

Best of luck,
Natalie Robinson Garfield
