Dear Savvy Auntie,

I'd love to know how other aunts or PANKs deal with the loss of a niece or nephew. I just lost my oldest niece at the age of 19 and it's killing me - so how do I help my brother and sister-in-law, whose pain is immeasurable?

Mourning My Niece

Dear Mourning My Niece,

I send my condolences to you and your family on the loss of your niece.

There are no fast and easy answers about how to handle the pain and sorrow as each person goes through their sorrow differently. I suggest you contact a bereavement center in your community and meet with a grief counselor or join a group which can be supportive and consoling.

Remind yourself that your niece lives on in your memories and in your heart. I suggest that you do something concrete to commemorate her life... make a charitable donation in her name, plant a tree, or donate your time to an organization that reflects her interests.

A young person's passing is doubly painful as it also the end of hopes for their future. It can take a long time for the sorrow to cease.

I wish you good luck,
