Who doesn't hate the annual visit to the doctor or the visit when you’re sick, tired and feeling yucky? I don't know anyone who loves visiting the doctor--and kids with special needs are no different. The visit can be incredibly frustrating and trying for parent and child alike. Special needs children don't necessarily like new environments and they may be worried about getting a shot or anxious because the waiting room is crowded and noisy. The wait for the appointment may be longer than expected. So, how can a Savvy Auntie help?
Think about this. A kid with special needs may need to go to the doctor once or for a series of appointments to address a medical need. Often there is wait time once the child is examined and questions need to be asked and answered. That's where auntie steps in.
Meet your niece or nephew at the doctor's office armed with new and fun things to do--and food! A puzzle, some crayons and paper, a book and some nutritious snacks can pass an hour waiting in the doctor's office. Even your own Blackberry, iPhone or iTouch can be a source of fun if you download some gaming apps or videos beforehand. While doctor offices can often be full of germs, make sure you have some anti-bacterial wipes or spray on hand as well.
Let's face it. The doctor's office is not a fun place any way you look at it. But, with careful planning savvy aunties can turn the experience into fun with their niece or nephew.
