There’s nothing better than planning a getaway to break up your routine. Are you itching for an escape? If so, you are not alone. According the U.S. Travel Association, at least 53 percent of people are planning on taking at least one overnight trip by April of this year. Planning a trip is great way to get quality time with nieces and nephew (not to mention a great way to give mom and dad a break), but getting all of the details right can be overwhelming. We’ve compiled some great tips for Savvy Aunties who are ready to hit the road!
Savvy Aunties may want to make their escape more exciting by inviting along your nieces and nephews. However, traveling with children means planning out the trip as best you can beforehand. There may be unavoidable delays, but having a fun-filled itinerary can make the journey as much fun as the destination.
Before you set out, there are a few things you need to take care of. After selecting your destination, make sure you find a date that works for everyone. Make sure that if your nieces and nephews are school age and you are traveling during that time; that they can take off.
Now that you’ve got the trip date and destination, most of the planning comes down to how you are getting there. For car trips, it’s important to plan out your route for bathroom breaks and food. Long stretches without either could lead to trouble. Pack up a small bag for each child with snacks and games or books. This way they will have plenty to do. It will also cut down on how many times you hear, “Are we there yet?” and allow you to focus on the road. Make sure to plan stretch breaks to let the kids get out some of their pent up energy. If you can schedule them by a fun sightseeing attraction, even better!
For those Savvy Aunties whose trip takes them on a bus or train, be prepared with plenty to do! Since you may not be able to get off for snacks, make sure each child has a few (not messy) snack options. If it’s a long trip, bring books or a board game. The bonus here is that you can play along with them since you aren’t driving! Another great option is buying or renting a hand held DVD player. That way you can all watch a movie together to pass the time.
Arguably the trickiest way to travel with your nieces and nephews would be by plane. Before you go, check out the Transportation Security Administration’s website for travel tips on flying with children. Once through security and prior to boarding, make sure you have snacks and drinks for each of the kids. Some airlines still serve food, however it may not be kid-friendly. Again, make sure to have a stash of items to keep them occupied. If they are old enough, your nieces and nephew can enjoy the movie playing or listen to their iPod.
But most importantly enjoy the ride. Traveling with your nieces and nephews can be a great experience if you plan ahead and keep your cool during any road bumps in your trip. Safe travels!
