A missing Will, inexplicable ghostly night time occurrences, a mystery that involves some of Young Adult and children’s best-loved books and cool interactive clues that allow kids to solve the mystery along with teen detective Ruby Skye. It’s all part of the fun as award-winning, tween web series Ruby Skye P.I. rolls out its second season, The Haunted Library this fall.
Web series are a growing new medium – a lot like TV series, but available free for anyone to enjoy at any time as long as they have an internet connection. But while new web series are being released daily, very few of them are for kids.
That’s only one of the reasons the kid-driven, family-friendly, multi-award winner Ruby Skye P.I. stands out from the crowd. The comedy mystery series’ first season, The Spam Scam, drew attention and fans for its high production values and its fast-paced, funny story telling.
This season Ruby Skye P.I. offers kids and the adults who love them a whole new entertainment experience. The nine episodes offer about an hours worth of video entertainment. Between the episodes, you can study and solve the clues. One clue reveals a new website with a secret video. Another yields an email address that you can messages to… and get responses back. A secret phone number behaves in a similar way when you send texts to it.
The Haunted Library also includes several websites jammed with content to entertain the whole family. The home site, RubySkyePI.com, has tons of extra features and behind-the-scenes video as well as weekly columns on topics like ghosts, the environment, how email scams work and how to develop the skills to be a detective, along with brownie and lemonade recipes and more.
ODearyLibrary.com – the website of the “haunted” library -- is filled with posts about children’s and Young Adult fiction: book reviews, polls, author profiles, videos of authors reading aloud from their books and interviews with authors. The site also offers up story related content, with characters coming to life through their posts. For example, fictional librarian Ophelia Bedelia has a hilarious plea to library card holders to return books on time and Ruby’s sister, Hailey writes fan girl reviews about her favorite books and authors.
Another web site is ODearyPuzzles.com filled with addictive word play puzzles created by fictional character Ava O’Deary. O’Deary Puzzles just happens to contain important clues to the mystery.
Over on HaileySkye.com, you can learn more about Ruby’s little sister and make a donation to her campaign to raise funds for Because I Am A Girl, an initiative of Plan to end world poverty by helping girls in need.
Hailey’s fund raising campaign is an important part of the plot of The Haunted Library, which points out another thing which sets Ruby Skye P.I. apart from your average entertainment property for kids. Not only does the series make extensive and innovative use of digital and interactive media in its storytelling, it contains important pro-social messages and strong female leads.
Unlike many TV and film properties for kids and families, Ruby Skye P.I. features kids actors playing close to their own age and who really look like real kids. The teenage characters are independent, determined and smart – especially the girls. This is a storyworld intended to engage kids’ imaginations and get them thinking.
And most wonderfully of all, Ruby Skye P.I. is entertainment that’s fun for adults too.
Season One --Ruby Skye P.I.: The Spam Scam -- is available in its entirety online at RubySkyePI.com. Season Two – Ruby Skye P.I.: The Haunted Library – rolls out this fall with a new episode every Wednesday from October 10 to December 5, 2012, plus tons of extra content, videos and clues to enjoy every day of the week.
