Cameron Diaz: Happily Not Having It All
Written By Savvy Auntie Staff Writers
Cameron Diaz doesn't want "it all" - at least, not all at once. She's quite happy to be an aunt and a career woman for now, the actress and model told InStyle Magazine this month.
"My family is the most important thing to me," Diaz said. "My family and my friends - I've always said that's my greatest wealth. And, yeah, I can be a pretty good aunt, but whether I'm a good aunt or a crappy aunt is really not remotely the same question as me being a good parent or a crappy parent. It doesn't have quite the same impact!"
And speaking of parenthood, Diaz is "not opposed to it happening," but, the star of Knight and Day says that "that kind of change would have to be either very well thought out, or a total mistake - a real oops!"
Diaz is not unaware of the challenges of motherhood and how they would impact her life.
"Having children changes your life drastically, and I really love my life," she said. "Children aren't the only things that bring you gratification and happiness, and it's easier to give life than to give love."
Diaz understands that the choice to delay motherhood can be a good one.
"Having it all means something different now," she said. "I grew up in the '80s, when women who were powerful wore men's suits and couldn't have families and were tough as nails. Then in the '90s, women decided, Wait, I want to have kids and a career, I want it all. And now we're discovering in our first decade of the new century that you can't do all of it - not well - all at once."
"Sometimes you have to pick and choose," she said. "And that has to be good enough, having faith that you're doing the best that you can."
