Be Savvy about a New Dangerous Trend: Caffeine Powder the “Cocaine” for Kids?
Some may not even be aware that pure caffeine exists in a powder form, is readily available on the Internet, and is legal. Teens are ordering caffeine powder and snorting it like cocaine for a prolonged high. They mistakenly think it's safe because everyone drinks caffeine in some form.
But this powder form, whether is being inhaled or dissolved in liquid and ingested, is concentrated, 100% caffeine. It can be deadly. There is a staggering amount of caffeine in 1 teaspoon of powder equivalent to 25 cups of coffee! Even ingesting smaller amounts of the powder can cause an overdose.
It's a potent stimulant that affects the heart, brain and central nervous system. The symptoms are much more severe than that well-known, jittery sensation that you have from drinking too much coffee: they include vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, agitations and tremors. The signs of an overdose include seizures, irregular and erratic heartbeats called arrhythmias, disorientation, stupor and a subsequent death.
This powder form is listed as a dietary supplement and is not regulated by the FDA. But the tragedy in Ohio, when a teen died from an overdose, has prompted the FDA to issue a warning about caffeine powder. Savvy Aunties need to warn their teenaged nieces and nephews about the dangers, too. Just because it is legal and a natural supplement, does not mean it is safe!
