Learning to Love Long Distance
This summer, I am becoming a long-distance auntie. Well, truthfully it’s not that long-distance but it is adding about another 45 minutes between me and my niece Caroline. My sister and her husband just purchased their first house and are making the big move this week. Of course, I am thrilled for them. After almost four years of hard work and searching, they found their dream home complete with a big backyard for Caroline to play in.
But I can’t help but feel a tiny bit sad. I won’t be able to take a really quick train ride to see them anymore. And it doesn’t help that Caroline is getting old enough to say things like “I miss you, Auntie.”
I know, I know. It sounds pretty ridiculous that I’m getting all weepy when they will still be close enough to make a day trip, especially when so many other aunties live in different time zones from their nieces and nephews. But like any Savvy Auntie, I have a plan.
First, I am going to get us all Skype ready. I need to purchase a web cam and install the software, but if it works for one of the most Savvy Aunties out there (I’m talking to you, Oprah!) it will definitely work for me and my family.
I love to write letters. In a way, this column is like a series of letters not only to you but to my family, especially my nieces and nephew. While Skype can be great, I think it’s time to pick up the old pen and paper and write down my thoughts, even when I’m a little down, just to stay in touch and involved.
Of my biggest challenges is going to be mastering my schedule. Between my family, friends, work and trying to manage my social life, I can sometimes feel all over the place. Sometimes it’s even hard to nail down dinner plans. It’s time to take a good hard look at my calendar and set aside some days now just for my niece - even if that means planning months in advance.
But here’s where I need your help! Do any of you long distance aunts have creative ways to communicate with your nieces and nephews? How do you stay involved in their lives when you are far away? Please share any ideas in the comments!
