Let's face it; no one likes to be in pain, especially children. Studies now show that music may be the resolution to all this discomfort. An article on MedlinePlus gives insight to what many doctors are saying about the benefits of music.
Easing the pain after surgery is important, but strong painkillers can cause breathing problems in children. Doctors limit these medications, but there are other things adults can do to help ease a child’s pain.
Researchers have come to realize that simply having a child listen to their favorite song distracts them from the pain. This even works with audiobooks and games. Dr. Ron Marina, from Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, NY said "It is well known that distraction is a powerful force in easing pain, and music certainly provides an excellent distraction".
The study showed that 30 minutes of listening to music or stories helped to distract children from pain. This suggests that Aunties can be more creative when it comes to helping their niece or nephew handle the pain of recovering from surgery. Turn up their favorite kind of music, make a playlist of their favorite songs, bring over an audiobook, or play a board game or video game with them, if they’re able to. Not only will you bring a welcome distraction, but you’ll also be helping them feel better - literally!
