The Love of Sports: A Great Gift!
For many reasons, the older I get, the more I appreciate the gifts bestowed on me by my family. What we lacked in holiday happiness or common courtesy, we made up for in experiences and adventures. I've been skiing since I was four and remember horseback riding, ice skating, even climbing to the top of Machu Picchu before I entered the first grade.
My parents supported our involvement in sports and activities. We ran or biked for hours, and with one lap around the block, we could readily drum up entire teams to play a game of baseball or kickball. We played with abandon.
I know that times are different; I grew up pre-computers and pre-playdates, but playing is still the foundation to sports. I secretly long for that kind of freedom and spirit for many of the kids in my life. However, I have also realized, Auntie, that especially in our role, we are able to give a lot of what we think we can't give them. And it if you are lucky, maybe more.
Regardless of your budget, I have five great gifts for you to give your nieces or nephews:
-Experience
-Advice
-Time
-Support
-Encouragement
These are key factors in building the confidence of any young athlete, and they are free - so give generously.
If you need a gift to wrap, here are my suggestions:
-A combination lock - for your valuables when you are out and about.
-A base layer of non-cotton clothing - look into fabrics that will wick moisture away from the skin.
-A water bottle - it is important to stay hydrated all year round - even when you are swimming!
-A bike helmet - that goes for you, too, Auntie!
-A ticket to a game - go see the sport your niece or nephew loves the most, look into college sports or minor league teams.
The love of sports is a great gift!
