Hidden Dangers in Everyday Items: 5 Safety Tips
They are everywhere, in toys, mini remotes, key fobs, watches, bathroom scales, and even singing greeting card. The list is endless! So next time you send your niece or nephew that talking card and toy, beware of their hidden danger...button batteries!
According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, a recent study found that 65,000 children were taken to the ER because of swallowed batteries.
Sometimes the batteries are small enough that children don’t have a choking issue from them lodging in their tracheas (wind pipes). However, that can just make the problem more insidious and harmful because batteries can leak acids. In as little as two hours, they can cause severe internal burns that require surgery to treat and repair.
Some tips to for a Savvy Auntie to keep her nieces and nephews safe:
1. Search your house and make sure all gadgets that have button batteries are stored away in safe place.
2. If you suspect your niece or nephew may have swallowed a button battery, go to the ER immediately.
3. If possible, let the doctors know the type of button battery; you can check the identification number on the battery package or the item your niece or nephew may have taken it from.
4. Do not induce vomiting or let them eat or drink until they get to the ER; see a doctor and have an x-ray to look for the battery.
5. There is a National Battery Ingestion Hotline (202-625-3333) that you can call for more specific instructions.
Even if you are not sure, get your niece or nephew checked out because with button batteries, better safe (and savvy) than sorry!
