May is National Melanoma Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer, and melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Dr. Amy Kim is a board-certified dermatologist from Atlanta, GA, and the founder of a line of infant skincare products called Baby Pibu. She has some tips to help you keep your nieces and nephews sun-savvy this spring and summer:
1. Regular daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can reduce the risk of melanoma by 50 percent. Babies six months and older can use sunscreen on a daily basis.
2. Look for chemical-free sunscreens with the active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Both are hypoallergenic and non-irritating, but are very effective at protecting the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
3. Avoid sunscreens with nano particles; since they are very small, they can pass through the skin into the bloodstream. Spray sunscreens with nano particles can be inhaled and are not recommended. Use lotions instead.
4. Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before sun exposure. A good rule of thumb is to apply sunscreen when putting on your baby or child’s swimsuit. This allows time for the sunscreen to bind to the skin and provide protection.
5. Reapply sunscreen at least every 1 ½ hours and after water exposure, including sweating.
For added protection, have your nieces and nephews wear clothes that contain SPF, cover-ups, and hats. Aunts need protection, too! The above guidelines go for adults, as well.
