At the risk of waving my freak flag a tad early in my LDA career, here's a secret confession: I'm a fanatic. I love getting geek-out excited about things. Books, movies, television (just about anything pop culture-related). Once I decide I love something, I love it with all my heart, beyond any rational thought. I am a fanatic.

As our Skype sessions continue, I've slowly unraveled one delightful fact about my cuter-than-daises niece, Allison: she's a fanatic too! This is a fact that even my sister reluctantly verifies. Recently, my big sis shared with a me a video of Allison watching Sesame Street Live in concert, which showcased an ecstatic Allison screaming to bits as she watched her favorite furry friend emerge on stage—Elmo. After showing me this display of uber excitement, my sister looked at me flatly and said, "I think she gets it from you." I couldn't help but feel the slightest swell of pride.

Allison loves her plush Elmo. He and plush Minnie Mouse are always by her side. Having proved themselves as fiercely loyal companions (as evidenced by our Skype sessions, in which they are ever-present figures), she treats them with incredible kindness in return.

As far as I'm concerned, showing passion for something in life is essential. Passion leads to inspiration, whimsy, drive and everything else worthwhile. So hats off to Minnie, Mickey, Bert, Ernie and of course, Elmo, for being Allison's first imaginary friends and true loves. May there be many more.
