Your Nieces and Nephews Have Too Much Homework

A recent study published in The American Journal of Family Therapy found that early elementary school children are getting more homework than is recommended – sometimes as much as three times more than recommended. The typical standard that is backed by the National Education Association and the National Parent-Teacher Association is known as the “10 minute rule” – 10 minutes per grade level per night. Kindergartners are not supposed to get any homework.
There are concerns that an overload of homework fosters negative attitudes toward school, as well as causes high stress levels, a lack of school-play balance, and physical health problems. As parents’ confidence in being able to help their children with the homework goes down, the stress level in the household increases. These parents believe children should be able to do their homework, and many assume the child is goofing off in school, and that’s why they are unable to do the homework.
Though it’s up to parents to talk to teachers about their child’s homework load, aunts can certainly help out with the workload. Why not sit down with your niece or nephew and help them get through their homework, with a special treat once they’re done, like a bike ride around the neighborhood, a game of catch, or a play a board game? Not only will they appreciate the help with their homework, their parents will also appreciate it!
