Five Tips To Help Avoid Childhood Obesity
Every auntie has heard about the rise of childhood obesity. But what you might not know is that you can set an example to help to keep your nieces and nephews healthy. Here are five tips on how to get your nieces and nephews on the road to proper nutrition!
1. When they are with you, don’t let them have sugary drinks (that means juice, soda and some sports drinks). Kids (and adults) can easily double or triple their daily caloric requirement just through the drinks they take!
2. No eating with the television on. All meals should be family time--that means the TV stays off and it’s time catch up on everyone's day. If the tube is on people don't listen to their internal cues and end up eating much more than if they would have taken their time, conversed with the family and paid attention to their bodies needs. Besides, time with auntie should be special!
3. No seconds! Kids don't need second or third helpings at meal time. Here are some quick guidelines. One serving of protein is the size of their palm, a serving of rice is the size of their fist. Cheese and peanut butter snacks should be the size of their thumb.
4. No eating after dinner. Most children go to sleep a few hours after their evening meal. As much as they may ask, there is no reason for a bedtime snack. The body does not need the extra food. Even babies after 4 months of age do not need to eat in the middle of the night
5. Get moving! Why watch a movie with your favorite niece or nephew when you can go to the park, take a walk or visit the zoo? Even if it’s raining you can host a dance party!
