Dear Savvy Auntie,

I love my sister but she and her son (my perfect nephew) are not close. My sister has done some things to put a strain in their relationship.

My nephew is getting married in March and asked me to dance with him for the "Mother & Son" dance. My nephew and I have ALWAYS been close and I want to say yes - but I don't want to hurt my sister (even though she has hurt me, too.) Plus, I try to stay out of their disagreements. I'm not sure what to do.

Wedding Dance Aunt

Dear Wedding Dance Aunt,

Weddings are a time of joyous celebration and a great deal of stress. They are also an opportunity for families to heal prior discord.

I suggest you speak to your nephew and tell him you are honored by his desire to have the first dance with you but that you are wary this decision may offend his mother and hurt her feelings.

You and he could try to find a different solution. Perhaps he could start the dance with his mother and finish it with you. I offered this idea to a bride in relation to her father and her stepfather. The result was very positive in bringing everyone much closer.

I hope this is helpful,
